Solberry Sea Buckthorn is a natural source of Omega-3, Omega-6, Omega- 9 and elusive Omega- 7. Omega-7 (Palmatoleic Acid) is a very rare constituent found in Sea Buckthorn fruit. Omega 7 is a component of human skin.

Omega-7 Definition: Palmitoleic acid is an omega-7 monounsaturated fatty acid that is a common constituent of the glycerides of human tissue. Carotenoids are plant pigments that are responsible for the vibrant yellow, orange and red colours of many fruits and vegetables. Out of more that 600 identified carotenoids, 50-60 can be transflored in the body into Vitam A.  Carotenoids are most famoust for their potent antioxidant poers. Oxidation is the process that makes iron rust and causes fruit to turn brown. It is a normal bodily process that produces a type of internal pollution called free radicals.  These unstable compound can damage the cells of the body and, in turn, can leave the body more vulnerable to cance, heat disease and the agent process. Eben though the body has internal methods to counteract the stibilize these free radicals. It is beneficial to offset theis damage and help prevent desiase by obtaining additional antioxidant protection throught the diatary intake of more carotenoi-rich fruits and vegetables every day. A few minutes of cooking helps release carotenoids in foods and make them easier to absorb.

Lutein  and Zeaxanthin are catorenoid pigments that are found in Sea Buckthorn. Some of the lutein and zeaxanthin ingested is deposited in the macula of the eye, where it filters or absorbs damaging high-energy blue light from the sun or indoor lighting and helps prevent age-related macula degeneration. Studies have shown that an increased comsumption of lutein causes serum lutein levels to increase and lutein concentration in the macula to increase. An increased c omsumption of lutein can decrease the risk of debelopomg Age-related Macular Degeneration. Lutien also is deposited in the skin where it decreases tissue damage and inflamation from ultra-violet light fronm the sun.

Beta-carotine is the major carotenoid. It is a Vitamin A precursor that helps maintain healthy eyes, skin, and liver. It also functions as a powerful antioxidant that helps reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. Sea Buckthorn is very rich in naturally occurring beta-carotenes.

Natural beta-carotene is nearly all-trans. Literature and research has shown that this all-trans beta-carotene has a maximum conversion rate into vitamin A. This potency, or pro-vitamin A activity, is expressed as International Units (I.U.). The activity of 1 I.U. is defined by the WHO (whorld health Organization) for pro-vitamin A as the activity of 0.0006 mg of pure all-trans beta-carotene (1.666,666 I.U./gram pure product).
Not every beta-carotene has maximum I.U. levels

For the other pro-vitamin A carotenoids (like cis beta-carotene and alpha-carotene) the conversion rate to vitamin A is limited. Research has shown that it is expected to be (approximately 50%) off all-trans beta-carotene. Therefore, 1 retinol equivalent (RE) is equal to 6 mg of all-trans beta-carotene or 12 mg of carotenoids with pro-vitamin A activity.

Lycopene is a red-pigment carotenoid found in the skin of Sea Buckthorn fruit. It is extremely powerful antioxidant that protects againt many types of cancers by preventing oxidative damage to the DNA and by preventign the progression of cancer at an early stage. Lycopene is most known for its assiciation with a decreased rist of developomg  prostate cancer in man. Several large studies have shown that men who consutme foods .

Phytosterols and Polyphenols

Phytosterols and Polyphenols are plant sterols that occur naturally in Sea buckthorn. 

Plant sterols and stanols have been known for their cholesterol lowering properties. These phytochemicals are essential components of plant cell membranes and can be found in their natural forms in fruits, vegetables, nuts and other plant sources.

Plant sterol like Brassicasterol, Campesterol, Stigmasterol, Clerosterol, B-Sitosterol, Sitostanol, Avenasterol occur naturally in Sea Buckthorn.  Studies have shown that plant sterols mimic cholesterol in the small intestine and partly block cholesterol absorption. Therefore, regular com consumption of foods containing plant sterols results in the lowering of LDL-cholesterol levels, while having no detrimental effect on HDL-cholesterol levels (often referred to as good cholesterol.  This would benefit those who want to lower their blood cholesterol livers,  i.e., especially those who have moderate to high blood cholesterol.
